Dr. Iqbal Survé’s Insights on 2024: Transformation, Sustainability, and Progress

As 2024 draws to a close, we are reminded of the journey that has brought us to this pivotal moment. It has been a year of profound challenges and transformative achievements—a year that underscores the power of vision, resilience, and collective action. For me, and for all those who share a commitment to creating a more equitable and inclusive world, 2024 has been a testament to the enduring belief that meaningful change is possible when we refuse to settle for the status quo.

Engaging with world leaders, including President Vladimir Putin in Moscow, highlighted the importance of South-South cooperation. BRICS, now expanded to include nations such as Egypt, Iran, and Saudi Arabia, represents a beacon of hope for the Global South. It is more than an economic bloc; it is a platform for redefining global power structures, fostering innovation, and creating sustainable development opportunities.

Education remains the cornerstone of societal progress, and in 2024, our efforts to bridge the gap in access to quality learning gained significant traction. Through Survé Philanthropies and the Dr. Iqbal Survé Bursary initiative, we received over 1,600 applications—a resounding affirmation of the demand for educational support. This bursary is not just about funding degrees; it is about fostering hope, breaking cycles of poverty, and empowering young South Africans to shape their futures. Survé Philanthropies continues to champion sustainable and impactful initiatives, ensuring that our contributions go beyond charity to create lasting change in the lives of those who need it most. During my visit to Premier Fishing’s farm this year, I witnessed firsthand the strides we have made in sustainable aquaculture, reinforcing our commitment to environmental stewardship and food security in South Africa.

In South Africa’s corporate landscape, where tradition often stifles progress, I have worked to ensure that Sekunjalo stands as a beacon of transformation. My commitment to this cause is not about meeting arbitrary quotas but about recognising the immense potential of women—especially black women—and creating an environment where they can thrive. At Sekunjalo, we have removed the barriers that have historically held women back, fostering an inclusive corporate culture that sets the standard for transformation in South Africa. Women empowerment is not just a goal; it is the foundation of a future that reflects the diversity and strength of our society.

Media freedom is not just an abstract principle; it is the cornerstone of democracy—a right that must be fought for and defended. In 2024, I stood firm with Independent Media against relentless attempts by powerful economic and political forces to stifle our independence and silence our critical voice. These efforts—disguised under the guise of “reputational risk”—are, in truth, an assault on freedom of speech in South Africa. By establishing our Group Ombudsman, we reaffirmed our commitment to ethical journalism—a beacon that exposes corruption, holds the powerful accountable, and amplifies the voices of the marginalised. At the World Media Summit, Viasen Soobramoney powerfully articulated the role of African narratives in shaping our continent’s future, echoing our belief that transformation in the media is not optional—it is imperative for the survival of democracy itself. Independent Media remains a defender of truth, a platform for justice, and a catalyst for change in an increasingly oppressive landscape.
